$ ' POLICE AND CIVIL CASES. Mr. S. E. M'Cartby, S.M., presided at tho Magistrate's Court yesterday, and dealt with the police cases. Myra Emily Buxton, who will bo 18 years of age next August, appeared to' answer a charge of stealing a pique skirt, value 205., the property of Mrs. Annie O'Brien, 19 Whittaker Street. Tho girl, it appjars; was beyond the control of her mother. She was at one tiriio a probationer at tho Porirua Mental Hospital, later a waitress at a tearoom,. then in service, but nowhere did she stay any length of time. On January 30 last sho went to the house of Mrs. O'Brien and begged to be taken in for the night, as sho had no money and no place to sleep. Mrs. O'Brien took the girl in and gave her breakfast in the moniiug. Sho told Mrs. O'Brien that sho wanted to catch tho Auckland express. She further stated that her name was Nurse Grey, and that she was a probationer at tho Porirua Mental Hospital. Sho left tho house soon after midday on February 1, and the piquo skirt disappeared' at the samo timo and was eventually found in her possession. She was convicted and ordorecl to come up for sentenco when called upon, conditionally on her staying two years in the Salvation Army Home. A remand for eight days was granted in the case against Allan Talbert, charged with indecent assault on a male.' . For failing to send his boy to school William Conrich, of Porirua, was fined 25., without costs. Georgo Henry Bradley, for disobeying a maintenance order in respect to two children, the arrears amounting to £10 10s., was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, no warrant to issue unless applied for by complainant, in the meanwhile defendant to report himself to the police once each day. CIVIL, CASES. Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., dealt witli the civil cases. Judgment was given for plaintiff by default in tho following cases: —Charles Slymon v. E. Hadley, £127 135., costs £6 ss. 9d.; A. E.. Kernot, Ltd., v. Bert Basil Baynes, £15 9s. 2d., costs £2 Is. 6d.; Hallenstein Bros., Ltd., v. R. Sutherland, £1 35., costs 75.; Van Staveren Bros v. Cuth Morse, 55., costs only; Leonard Arthur Line v. John Trainor, £2 55., costs 125.; same v. Gilbert Hare, £10 Is., costs £1 12s. 6d.; same v. Charles A. M'Fadzean, £3 12s. 6d., costs 125.; same v. Thomas Andrews, £1 135., costs. 75.; James Henry Playno v. Walter Oatham, £2 13s. 6d., costs lis.; Motor Import Co., Ltd., v. Briscoe Import Co., Ltd., £l 35., costs 55.; Laery and Co., Ltd., v. Christina Maud Oliver, 155., costs only; R. Janson v. Edward Ryan, £2 3s. sd„ costs lis.
' CLAIM FOR DAMAGES. The Cuba Street Land and Investment Co., for whom Mr. A. Dunn appeared, proceeded against R. Pearson, boot importer, Cuba Street, to recover £10 damages alleged to have been caused by defendant permitting a water-pipo on his'premises to become defective, whereby there was a discharge of'water flooding .the plaintiff's cellar and damaging goods therein. After Rearing the evidence the Magistrate nonsuited the plaintiff company, awarding thfi defendant costs, £3 lis. Mr. J. S. Barton appeared for the defendant. CLAIM FOR RENT. Mr. S. E. M'Cartliy, S.M., heard the civil case in which J. F. Kucli and Co., pork butchers, Cuba Street, claimed from "William John Hilder, motorman, of Island Bay, the sum of £13 6s. for rent, also for the possession of a tenement of four Tooms. For the defence it was contended that tlie rent claimed (19s. a week) was in excess of that permitted by the war legislation of 1916. On this point the Magistrate reserved his decision. Mr. _C. W. Tringham appeared for plaintiff and Mr. J..Scott for the defendant.
