£11,693

RED TRIANGLE APPEAL

FURTHER BIG SUMS

ATTRACTIONS FOR' THE WEEK

The big push of the Red Triangle workers is proceeding with, unabated vigour, and up to noon yesterday tho sunt in hand for Wellington city and suburbs was £11,693 9s. (id. The third subscription list to March 11 is as under

The Hutt's Response. A meeting \.convened by the Mayor was held in the Council Chambers, Lower Hutt, last evening. There were about 40 or 50 present, and the Mayor explained the object of the meeting and introduced the Hon. T. M. Wilfoj-d and Dr. Mason. Mr. Wilford and Dr. Mason addressed the meeting and explained the objects of the fund, aud referred to the good work ivhich is being done by the Y.M.C.A., urging those present to form themselves into a committeo to help organise the work in the district. Mr. Nicholson was appointed treasurer. The sum of £134 12s. Gd. was subscribed in the room and various residents offered their motorcars for the use of canvassers.

Big Matinoe To-day. An additional inducement to parents to attend the grand Red Triangle matinee at His.Majesty's to-day is the fact that children will be admitted at half rates, the prices for adults being 2s. and Is. ■ Astonishing value will bo given at this entertainment, any one of tho many items being worth the price of admissio/, and behind all is the worthiness of the' cause, so that a good house is anticipated, with "standing room only" sign,, displayed long before tho curtain rises. The performance is being given by arrangement with Fullers' Theatres and Vaudeville, Ltd., and all the artists concerned are giving their whole-hearted co-operation in making tho matinee a success in every way. Concerning the War Tank.

A number of communications have been received from parents, urging that if the Red Triangle Day procession starts from the Government Buildings at a quarter-past twelve there will be no opportunity fur school children to see it, and especially to see the war tank which will lead it.

For the information of parents and tho general public the secretary of the Red Triangle Day executive wishes it to bo known that ample timo will be given for every man, woman, and child in Wellington to see tho tank. The proccssion will leave tho buildings at about 12.30 p.mv, and, led by the tank, will go along Lambton Quay, Willis Street, Manners Street, Cuba Street, Ingestro Street, and Willis Street .again, back to Post Office Square. As tanks do not race along, this journey will take some time, and workers will be able to see the show, whether their lunch hour is from. 12 to 1 or from 1 to 2. Afterwards the tank will ramble about the city, having, boen promised the freedom of it by the Mayor.

Special For Children. For tho special information of_ the children it must be said that this is tho tamest tank that ever came across the ocean blue; you only have to call its name and it will follow you. It lives on huns and bombs and guns, and little things like that..And everywhere this tame tank runs it squashes things out flat. Therefore it's wise, you, little folk, to stand quite far away., lesfc in a clumsy kind of joke, the tank began to piny. It really wouldn't hurt ally, it's kinder than most people; hut "it's so long and wide and highwell, higher than a steeple. It came from somewhere o'er the sea to get some clips of coffee and cigarettes and pots of tea and chocolate and toffeo for our brave soldiers far away who haven't seen their mothers for many and many and many a-djy. Pleaso tell this to the others.

A Clock on Strike,

A number of citizens havo written to complain about the tied Triangle clock at tho Bank of New Zealand corner. They say that at 2 o'clock yesterday it still stood, or stood still, at £9700, when they knew for a fact *that the total was over £10,000. Our correspondents need not be concerned further. The clock will go regularly in future, and at r.oon and o pm. it will bound forward astonishingly. The fact of the matter is—it is really a secret, but it's an open ore—this clock was secured on the understanding that it did not strike oi even run on tick. What was wanted was an open-faccd clock which would do as it was told, and go where it was pushed.. And all these requirements were fulfilled. What was overlooked was that it is a st-ntk-up clock —it wouldn't lift a hand for anybody. But all this is overcome now, and anyone who wants to tell the Red triangle total has only to raise lus eyes to the stuck-up clock, aud it can't help telling him. Thousands of Girls, Speaking off-hand, if it is permitted to do so where ladies are concerned, there will be about 1000 fair helpers doin" their best, in the streets oil Friday, to "gather the rosebuds while thoy may" for the Red Triangle Day Funds. There will be collectors at every corner and stalls at every other corner, more or less. The only way to escape, it' anyone really wants to escape, will bo to buy a badge for £1, or 55., or 2s. 6t1., or Is. Even then there are privateers who do not recognise the piracy exemption badges of other buccaneers. That, however, is nothing to be afraid of, as you have the law/with you, if you have 1 purchased exemption. These 1000 ladies belong to almost every national and patriotic body in Wellington, and thoy arc determined to leave 110 effort utiattempted in providing for the lads in tho firing line.
