PETONE

The fortnightly meeting of the Petone .Borough Council was held last night. There were present:—The Mayor (Air. J. \V. li'Kwan) and ! Councillors C. i\ Brocklebauk, W. Cox, J. Foster, J. Churchhoirse, J). M'Keuzie, 11. Jones, and E. Tovey.

Two cases of diphtheria were reported by tho health inspector.

The Prime Minister wrute regretting that-no reduction could be made in, the existing railway rates of freights' ou .cement, tar, and bitumen supplied to local bodies for use in roadmaking. The Minister of Justice acknowledged receipt of the council's letter conveying a resolution passed by it relative to one of the city Magistrates, and stated that ho had' placed the same on record.

It was decided to make a donation of £10 towards.the funds of the Red Triangle Day Committee.

It was decided, without much discuss;on, to support a remit from ths Auckland City Council, urging tho retention of Samoa- ;in British hands after'the war.

The Hutt River Board wrote asking the council to joir. ifc in taking legal proceeding to test the question' as to whether the occupier of part of tha Wilford Settlement was liable "for rates.

No action was taken in tho matter.

In his monthly report, tlic borough engineer (Air. A. Coivie) stated that tho work of tarring tiio footpaths in Queen, Buick, and "Elizabeth Streets, and part of Victoria. Street would lie. proceeded with., Tho average weekly consumption of water since last report was '2,425,000 g:iilons, and the maximum pressure BClb. Notice had ju'iit been received that the gas cookers ordered in Decomber, 1916, were expected to come to hand soon. Five miscellaneous building permits of a total value of £161 were issued during the mouth, and 23 house services had been hi id in connection with the eeworago scheme. To date Gfl2 permits had been issued to connect with the sewerage system. The cost of fho works to date was £'136.017.
