RED TRIANGLE APPEAL

SOME BIG DONATIONS

PROGRESS OF THE CAMPAIGN

The Red Triangle campaign for funds to enable tho Y.M.C.A. to carry on its good work for the soldiers is Tnukisg satisfactory headway, and the svnoimt in hand to March 9 was £10,786 19s. sd. The first list of contributions, to March &, for Wellington city and suburbs is as under:—

"X.Y.Z." 50 0 0 •Wardell Bros, and Co., D. Anderson iin£ Son, Ltd., W. Campbell, ' Ltd., Chnndler am] Co., Ltd., ' Mrs. J. Scobie M'Konzie, Jfrs. A. K. S. M'Konzio,

A Tank in Lambton Quay. Tanks of the kind used in Flanders have marched up the streets of French and Belgians towns; they have even promenaded the London streets in tho peaceful pursuit of war funds. But there has never been a war tank seen in tho streets of Wellington. On Friday, however, this omission will ho remedied. A most Tcalistic tank will paco slowly along Lambton Quay,, up Willis Street, and on other thoroughfares in the city. It will lead, not cheering troops, as the tanks did ab ■Flers, but decorated motor-cars, whose owners will have turned them out attractively and filled them with pretty girls.- in order to gather as much coin as poesilile for the ]fad Triangle Dity Fund. None of the cars will refuse tha humblest donation, the widow's mite will he welcomed as much as the miser's "mightn't," and the big tank at tho head of the procession will haw tho greatest capacity of all for tho metal mediums of exchange. In tke [ first place it will bo very high, and it will he very wide and hollow. It mill require a good deal of feeding. TVhen it is taken to pieces again, preparatory to being packed back to Flanders, it is expected to pan out pretty well. The rumour current that this huge machine has been sent out by the boys in France to hold up the citizens of 'Wellington has not yet been verified, doubtless owing to the censor's reticence. At any rate, the money it collects is going to tho same lads in the form of hot drinks and smokos, and such comforts. Anyono who gets run over by tho tank must take tho consequences, and the Best way to avoid that is to approach tho machine from the side and toss your money through a gun-port. When you do so the tank will say, "Thank you," quite clearly. Cars, for the Procession. Owners of motor-cars are benug appealed to by the Citizens' Committee of tho Bed Triangle Day Fund to decorate their cars and tako part in the Red Triangle profession, which will start from the Government Buildings at 12.15 o'clock on Friday aiternoon and proceed through the principal streets of tho city. Those who aro unable to be present themselves are asked to lend their cars for tho occasion. Where to Pay in Subscriptions. To facilitate the of subscriptions to the Bed Triangle Day Fund, depots have been oiporied in the offices of Horace Baker, Ltd., next the Bank of New Zealand, Lambton Quay; Norman Aitken, bookselkir, Courtenay Place; S. and W. Mackay, Booksellers, Cuba Street; Y.M.C.A. oflices, Upper Willis Streot, and the Citizens' .Red Triangle Day office, next H. D. Bennett and Co'.'s, Willis Struct. A RED TRIANGLE NIGHT I THE "LOOK WHO'S HERE ,, COMPANY. A very success/ill performance was given by tho "Look Who's Here" Coin, pany in the Grand Opera House- last r.ight in aid of the. Hod Triangle Fund. Mr. Jack Waller-and all the members of his company, behind the footlights and in front, wove giving their services freo of charge. J. C. Williamson, Ltd.. provided Uie theatre and the lighting as n contribution to the fund, i and oilier assistance had been sfivc-n liy willing helpers. There was a fairly large and entirely appreciative audience.

During tho interval the Mayor wt Wellington (Mr. J. V. Luke, 'M.P., C.M.G.), oxprosicd the city's gratitude for the aid that was being given by Mr. Jack Waller and Ilia company ii, raising the money required tor' Llio soldiers' trench comforts. He explained that nobodv connected with theevening's entertainment was uinkinrr any charge for liis or her services. Tlio spirit that was- being shown by the company should serve as an added in-

nentive to the people of Wellington te pvovido all the nioiiej- that was being pskod for by the V.JI.C.A. The audience gave cheers (or die company at the call of the Alnyor.

An unrehearsed feature of the pn Sianimn was an auction sale, conducted by Miss Ccci'ia (/old, who called for bids" for a basket of flowers handed to her from the stalls. She sold tin basket several timas, successive purchasers directing that it should bo put up again. The highest price paid was £25, and other prices ranged from £20 to £3 3s.
