SIR JOHN MADDEN j CHIEF JUSTICE OF VICTORIA ! Melbourne, March 11. Sir John Madden, Chief Justice and : Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria, is j dead.—Press Assn. : [Sir John Madden, tho son of an ; Irish solicitor, was born at Cork iii ■ ! 18-14, and arrived in Melbourne with ' his family in 1857. His early education was at a private school in Eng- -i laud and at a Marist College in France, ; and later at St. Patrick's College, Mel-. \ bourne, and the University in the same ) city, where ho took his B.A. degree ■ in 1863, and LL.B. with gold medal one- ; year Inter. Ho adopted the legal profession, and in 187-1 was returned to ; tho Victorian Legislative Assembly. : He was Minister of Justice in the M'Culloch Government of 1875, and in i the Service Administration of 1880. ! On tho resignation of Chief Justice ; Hcginbotham in 1893 ho was appointed j Chief Justice and knighted. For ten , years Sir John was Vice-Chancellor of'. j tlm University of Melbourne, and he } had been Chancellor' since 1897. Hβ ; was appointed Lieutenant-Goyernor ill : 1899, having three times previously ad- ; ministered tho Government of the col- j ony, and had acted in a similar capacity ; on several occasions since. ' The death is announced of Mr. George J von Lengerke Meyer, ex-Secretary of : tho Navy.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. _ : [Mr. Meyer, who was in his sixtieth ; year, was American Ambassador to Italy from 1900 to 1905, and to Russia from 1905 to 1907.
