Ho adopted the legal profession, and in 187-1 was returned to ; tho Victorian Legislative Assembly. : He was Minister of Justice in the M'Culloch Government of 1875, and in i the Service Administration of 1880. ! On tho resignation of Chief Justice ; Hcginbotham in 1893 ho was appointed j Chief Justice and knighted. For ten , years Sir John was Vice-Chancellor of'. j tlm University of Melbourne, and he } had been Chancellor' since 1897.
