THE KAIKOURA FIRE
THE INSURANCES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, March 11. Tho fire at Ifaikoura, which destroyed the Adelphi Hotel and the premises of Mr. Messent, tobacconist and bil-liard-saloon keeper, Mrs. Stirling, confectioner, Mr. Whitehead, jeweller, and Strange and Co., drapors, started at the back of Messent' a and quickly spread till checked by a brick wall between Strange's and Flower's store. Messrs. Messent and Whitehead were uninsured, the latter estimating his loss at £1000. Mrs. Stirling was insured for £100 in the North British Office and Strange and Co. for £1000 in the London and Liverpool and Globe and £1500 in tho Yorkshire Office, besides various smaller sums; Mr. Shields, tho licensee of the Adelphi Hotel, had his furnituro and personal effects insured for £150 in tho Guardian Office.
