HEAVY ATTACKS ON THE BRITISH

POSmONS LOST AND RETAKEN NEW ADVANCE IN PALESTINE JAPAN AND THE PROBLEM OF INTERVENTION The war dispatches to-day disclose great activity on the enemy's front which is opposed to the British. Severo local attacks were launched in Flanders, one against the British line at Polderhoek, on a mile of front, and the other on the Belgian section. The British temporarily lost a length of trench at Polderhoek, but ultimately regained it after hot fighting. Tho Belgians valiantly defended their line against an attack of superior numbers, and were luckily assisted by the timely arrival of reinforcements. A notable feature of the fighting of the last few days has been the large number of German aeroplanes put out of action, particularly on the British side: In one day the First Brigade of the Royal Flying Corps accounted for 18 machines. There has also been great bombing activity by our raiding squadrons. The French section of the line is active, but there are no important developments. In Palestine General Allenby has achieved an advance of three miles on eighteen miles of front. The political situation in Russia has not changed materially, save that M. Trotsky has resigned the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
