MR. J. M'COMBS, M.P.

CREDITORS TAKE BANKRUPTCY PROCEEDINGS. A petition that Mr. J. M'Combs, M.P., should be adjudged a bankrupt has been filed in the Supreme Court (says the Cbristchurch "Sun" of Saturday). The petitioning creditors are Kincaid's, Ltd., and Bowron Bros., Ltd., and the ground of the petition is that the debtor has committed an available act of bankruptcy, a distress warrant having been executed on him and returned "nulla bona." For some time past the movements of Mr. M'Combs have been wrapped in. a little mystery, and his present location is not definitely known. Consequently, the petitioning creditors are moving for an order for substituted service, and this motion probably will be heard by His Honour Mr. Justice Herdman on Monday, in Chambers. The issue of a direction for substituted servk» is a matter entirely for the discretion of the Judge. Should Mr. M'Combs be adjudged a bankrupt, he will lose his seat in Parliament. The Legislature Act provides, among other things, that a person who is an undischarged bankrupt shall not be eligible for election as a member of Parliament, and also that any member of Parliament who becomes bankrupt within the meaning of the laws relating to bankruptcy shall lose his seat.
