A fire which occurred at 4 this morning resulted in the destruction of Sheilds's Adelphi Hotel, Nessent's billiardroom and barber's shop, Mrs. Stirling's refreshment rooms, H. J. Whitehead's jewellery shop, and Strange's branch drapery. F. H. Flowers's establishment was saved by a brick wall and the manual fire extinguisher. Mr. Whitehead is insured in the United office, and his loss is about £1000. Mr. Nessent was uninsured, and his loss is about £500. Mrs. Stirling was insured for £100. The other insurances were unascertainable to-day. The morning was calm or the loss would have been much greater. The fire originated in one of the shops. A telegram received by the Secretary of the General Post Office states that the fire destroyed the following business premises in the West End:— Strange's, draper; Whitehead, jeweller; Stirling, tea rooms; Messent's billiard saloon; and the Adelphi Hotel. All were totally destroyed.
