The letter stated:—"On the Hitbject of the erection of a light on the Nine-' pins Rock, near tho Ohetwode Islands, 1 have now to inform you that. I have brought tho matter before Cabinet; and it has been decided that provision for 8, nuitable automatic acetone-acetylene light will bo considered when the Estimates are being framed and submitted tn Parliament for nest gear's expenditure, and that if the money ie voted the work of erecting the light will be proceeded with. As regards Tory Channel, in view of the fact that there are now leading lights at the entrance and also it light on Diffenbach Point, at the junction of Tory Chan-, nol and Queen Charlotte Homid, and that there is great need for economy during the war, the question of eroding further Hghtß in this channel must stand over for the present."

'An accident ■which might have , had sen- i one results for tho Otago dock happened ! at Port Chalmers on Tuesday morning, | when a steamer collided with the piles | erected to keep 3hin9 off the projectiiig ro'clie. Tho structure overturned into the water, and caused the vessel to strike the caisson which keeps tile water out of the dock. A bis , ringbolt was torn from the caisson, which escaped further damage. Had extensive repairs to the caisson been required the use of another dock would have been needed for the purpose.
