BOWLS

CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS , PAIRS FINAL GAMES TO-DAY The continuation of the champion of champions pairs tourney oil tho Thorndon Club's "green yesterday was not marked by the best of conditions. In tho morning the weather was gloomy, and owing to tho damp state of the green the bowls-were inclined to pick up tho dirt a good doal, and wipors were ju general requisition. The green itself, under the circumstances, was playing remarkably well, drawing faithfully on both hands, though naturally grippy through the effect of the clammy atmosphere and occasional rain during tho past few days. As tho first game wore on the green improved, and loss earth was flicked up by tho bowls, but the games to finish last were played in a drizzle of rain. Tho rain continued throughout the afternoon, but the management decided to play the third round notwithstanding, so it was a case of umbrellas, overcoats, and wet, slippery bowls—conditions under which no championship games should bo decided. The play in the second round (the games played yesterday morning) were in most cases one-sided. It somehow or other; happens that way in bowls at times. For example, Kastbourne had a runaway win from Khandallah, and the Otaki men were, too much for Seatoun's representatives. Thorndon's pair never had a look in with Victoria, Petone trounced Karori soundly, and Island Bay never looked like beating Kelburn. The hest-fought •finish was that between Lyall Bay and Hataitai. With two heads to go, the Bay team had a. leeway of .five" points to pick up, anl they did none to spare. The tie necessitated an extra head, which saw Lyall Bay one shot and the game at the.finish. Another good game was that between Lower Hutt and Wellington. Wellington were placed in the unfortunate position of having to get five to tie (21 —16) on the last head. With no chance of getting the required number on that head, Horner killed tho head with his last bowl. On the next try thero was a romote- chauce, but drawing play only gave Wellington three shots, leaving Hutt the ga'me, with a couple of pouits to sparo. Simpson led particularly well for the Hutt. Muir, leading for Wellington, was not so accurate as he usually is. In the third round the Newtown men won with ridiculous ease from Lyall Bay. Otaki and Eastbourne put up a great fight, and the game was anybody's until tho last head, which Powell decided by drawing a fine shot when Otalci lay in a very promising position. ' Tho game between Hutt and Kelburn was full of interest towards the end. Kelburn established a strong load by scoring twelve points to Hutt's one, when the men from the Valley picked themselves up, and drew up l within five of their \ opponents, with three heads to go. The . struggle for victory in the last two heads saw some excellent play, but Gray and Dpherty played steadily and accurately, and secured a 'four-point win. The scores are as follow: — SECOND ROUND. Lyall Bay (Tyrrell and Barnes) beat Hataitai (Folding and Barnes), 21— 20.' Eastbourne (Mayer and Powell) beat Khandallah (Mansfield and J. A. Plimmer), 31—18. Otaki (F. H. and A. Bright) beat Seatoun (Wyatt and Green), 20—10. Victoria (Fossette and Hemingway) beat Thorndon (Upham and Thompson), 29—15. . Petone (M'Ewan aud Melhuish) beat Karori (Honderson and Cooper), 2-1— 14.
