A PERSISTENT SOUTHERLY

In these dull days a cheering'word from the Government Meteorologist would brighten things, but that word has still to be spoken. The persistent southerly which has been blowing for days still holds sway locally, and yesterday it brought with it' a penetrating rain and heavy fog. Present indications are for unsettled and showery conditions generally, and further heavy rain is likely in the East Coast districts of the North Island. High south-east winds are expected northwards of Farewell Spit, and Kaikoura, and moderate to strong easterly io northerly winds elsewhere.
