ROAD RESERVATIONS
FOR MOTOR GARAGES,
At last evening's meeting' of the City Oouncil the Outlying .Districts Committee reported that they were constantly receiving, applications from property owners"ior"permission ito erect motor sheds on the unformed road reservations in the outlying districts, and the reports of the City •Engineer were invariably against the granting of such applications, but
owing to the action of several previous councils in granting certain consents, the committee deemed it desirable to flow ask the council for a. lead as to jrfiat policy the Vsouncd desired to adopt for the future. , . Councillor R, A. -Wright- said that in view of all the circumstances the council should deal with each case, on its merits. Ho moved in that direc"Comicillor M. F. Luckie said that the fault lay with tho way the land was originally cut up. The sections were so small that there.was no room for paragea on the section as well as the house. At the same time, they must recognise that motor-cars were no longer a luxury, but; a commercial necessity, and there was no reason why permits should not be allowed on street reservations, where such land was never likely to be used-for streets. , Councillor W. H. Bennett believed that each case should be dealt witu on its merits.. . . Councillor Castle objected to such permits being given to erect garages on road reservations on the score ot town-planning. They had been going on higgledy-piggledy for years, and there were some members who were, on the town-planning ticket who now advocated this method; or disfiguring th OoSilorM.F.Luckic:»Mr : Hunt was one of the first applicants! Councillor Barber said that he could not acree with Councillors Frost and Castle The caseV Wellington was different from most other places. In Cliristoliurch, for example, such concessions would not be necessary, as the streets wero made their full width, but in Wellington there were many suoh placos which would not be at all disfigured by what Councillor frost called "dog kennels.", Tho motion was carried. .. •
