Mr. Justice Herdman arrived in Christchurch from Wellington on Saturday. Ho will bo formally welcomed by the legal profession of that city this morning.
Mr. A. H. Holmes, registrar of the Supreme Court at Christchurch, and formerly clerk of the Wellington ■ Stipendiary Magistrate's Court, has received word that his son, Lieutenant G. H. Holmes, M.C., was wounded and gassed on February 19. Lieutenant Holmes was awarded the Military Cross for. gallantry at Passchendsele on October 12 last. Prior to going away in tho Eighteenth Reinforcements, Lieutenant Eulmes was employed in the legal firm of Messrs.' Meares and Williams.
It is understood, says our Masterton correspondent, that Mr. A. N. Burns, M.A., of Lower Hutt District High School, has been appointed an inspector under the Education Department, and that ho will be succeeded by Mr. W. N. Dempsey, headmaster of tho Eketahuna District High School.
Tho Very Rev. Dr. Kennedy, formerly Rector of St. Patrick's College, left Wellington on Saturday to take charge of the seminary at Greenmeadows. At the college on Friday evening Dr. Kennedy was accorded a formal farewell by the boys and staff, the new rector, the Rev. Father Gilbert, S.M., presiding. Father Gilbert referred, to the excellent work done on behalf of the college by Dr. Kennedy during tho last nine or ten yean. They all regretted exceedingly his departure. The boys read an appreciative address to Dr. Kennedy, and on their behalf the latter was presented with a roller-top dusk. Members of the staff and _ a large number of students heartily cheered Dr. Kennedy as the train drew out of the Thorndon Station on Saturday.
After 51 years' service Mr. A. Stedman has retired from the position of manager of the Bank of New South Wales in Christchurch. At the Chamber of Commerce on Friday, the business men of Christchurch assembled and presented Mr. Stedman with a solid silver salver as a small token of their esteem. Mr. Stedman's successor is Mr. G. A. B. Mackay.
Mr. Samuel Cook, sen., a very old resident of Otaki, died suddenly at his home on Wednesday morning from a neart attack. The lato Mr. Cook had resided at Otaki for a great many years, carrying on business as licensed interpreter and land agent.
• Mr. D. Seymour, general secretary of the Returned Soldiers! Association, will leave to-day on a tour of inspection of the various returned soldiers' associations in the Taranaki district.
Tho Rev. James M'Caw, of Lower Hutt, has received news by cablegram that his son, Peter Hankine M'Caw, died at No. 4 Stationary Hospital, France, on February 26. The late Mr. M'Caw was wounded and gassed in June last, and it was mainly duo to tho effects of the latter that he ultimately succumbed. Mr. M'Caw joined tlie teaching profession in _ 1912, and while completing his training nt the Teachers' College and Victoria College in 1915 he enlisted and went to tins front.
Mr. D. P. Sheppard, who for some time past has been in charge of the seed and grain department of the New Zealand Farmers' Co-operative Distributing Co.j Ltd., Wellington, on Friday severed his connection with the firm, m order to represent Messrs. Cooper and Co. at Christchurch. A presentation was made to Mr. Sheppard by the central manager, who spoke of tho high esteem in which the recipient was held. Mr. W. 13. Wilson, lnle of Messrs. Gibbons and Co., succeeds Mr. Sheppard with tho'Distributing Co.
Mr. A. E. Carver, of tho staff of the Christchurch Land and Deeds Office, who has servered his connection with the Department, after serving in the Civil Service for over twenty years, to go into business on his own account, was' on Thursday afternoon presented uy his fellow-officers, with a case of pipes as a token of their goodwill and esteem.
The late Mr. James Howie, who died at Komata last week, aged 77 years, was formerly farming in the Cambridge district for many years. He was born in Ayrshire, Scotland, and arrived in the colony in 1864, Bottling at Pukerimu, Cambridge. He saw service as n, volunteer during the Maori War. He was pro-deceased'by his wife and live daughters, aud is survived by one ison and one daughter. For some years ho liad been residing with his son, Mr. James Howie, at Komata.
Advice has heon received that LanceCorporal A. G. Davidson, of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, was admitted to the Walton-on-Thames Hospital on February 22, having been gassed in France. This is the second occasion on which Lance-Corporal Davidson has been gassed, the first being on Juno 8 of Inst year. So far as was known he was sti'll in England recently, ho \ - ing made a very 6low recovery, so that lie can have only just returned to the front. Before enlisting, • Lance-Cor-poral Davidson was employed in the stereotyping department of "Tho Sun ' newspaper, Christchtirch.
Mr. J. Caradus, who has been on the staff of tho Bank of New South Wales in Nelson for the past four years, has been transferred to the inspector's staff; Wellington. .Prior to taking up his appointment Mr. Caradus will re* iieve the manager at tho bank at Waverley.
The death occurred in Wanganui on Friday evening of Mr. Thomas Finlayson Drummond, at the age of 76 years. The late Mr. Drummond, who was born in Perthshire, Scotland, came out to Wellington in 1864, and entered' the ironmongery business, in which he had served his time in one of the largest establishments in, tho Old Country. In 1879 was established the business of Drummond and Co., which has been carried on ever since by the late Mr. Drummond and his sons.
