RATIONING DAY IN LONDON SOME NOVEL SCENES. London, February 26. Rationing day introduced some novel scenes in 'restaurants and hotels. The majority adopted the system of ■ exchanging vouchers for meat .and other coupons, especially for fish. There was a great demand for vegetarian dishes. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. THE CONSULAR SERVICE FUTURE SCOPE OF DUTIES. (Rec February 27, 10.30 p.m.) London, February 26. In the House of Commons Mr. Steel Maitland, Under-Secretary for tho Colonies, in introducing the estimates for the Department of Overseas Trade, stated that out of| sixteen Imperial Trade .Commissioners, thirtoen had been sanctioned, and nine had been actually appointed. British Consuls in future would be expected to deal adequately with their districts, while tho duty of commercial attaches would be fa, keep the Government informed as to the general financial development and economic state of the country where they were stationed, and also to keep a constant; watch in order that any system of commercial penetration attempted by our rivals would be clearly understood, and a knowledge thereof put at the ; disposal of the British trading community.—Reuter. SUICIDE OF A.GERMAN GRAND . DUKE Amsterdam, February 25. The, Grand Duke of MecklenburgStrelitz has committed suicide.
