- -The- solicitor for iho Railway Commissioners gave evidence that though ill-operation for only a few months, the system had resulted in a large ■saving in working expenses. Ho denied that there was any intention that the system'jhoi?Jd penalise the workmen.
The Chief Commissionci gave .evidence that thetween five-and six. thousand railwaymen had gone to the var. Many had not been yet the same amount of work was being done under effective methods. If the men came back they would replace casual lahour?" the witness was asked.
"If there had been no war, what would you have done with your surplus lahour?" ■ -~-,'
