PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL
FORTNIGHTLY • MEETING
The regular meeting of the PetoneBorough Council was held last night. There were- present: Tiio Mayor '(Mr. J. W. M.'Ewan) and Councillors'C. P. Brocklebank, W. Cox, J. Churchouse, J. Foster, S. Ncwlaud, J. M'Dougall, D. M'Kenzie,S. Jones, and B. Tove?. The .Wellington City.'Council wrote with -reference to the-maintenance of tho Hutt pipe 'bridges. It was agreed to maintain the approaches on tho Petoneside of the main bridge. Tli© councillors unanimously agreed to support a ■ resolution forwarded by the'Makara;" County Council- urging .upon .'the. Government the necessity of passing- such legislation as would permit of some suitable form.of taxation of-motors. --.• /.'P. T. Moore wrote advising that ho was petitioning the Government-to pay all his license fees for the current year in consequence of .-tho- train being put on contrary to the promises made by Cabinet, the letter Was'received, and. the council decided .'to 'proceed with the collection of all license .fees.

Regarding- motor--buses, .the Lower .Hutt.Borough- Gounil wrote-consenting to the Petone Council's buses running to Lower Hutt; subject to the condition that 'tho maximum fare-., to Ijb charged for the'single journey-between Lower. Butt and Wellington or vice versa should not'exceed one shilling. The letter was received, and it was agreed to pay tho Hutt Council a fee of £1 per annum in respect of each bus;'.used'on thei roads ! . :

Messrs. Kirk and Wilson forwarded it copy of Mr. Justice. Chapman's judgment' in an appeal against a conviction for an infraction of the speed' limit .>' the I'etone Borough Council, which His Hoiiolir allowed; holding that the by-law was invalid. The- grounds of invalidity were not because ,of tho speed limit"imposed,'but because the by-law did not discriminate between the 'different parts of the borough. : The council decided to draft a new by-law eliminating the features which- had made the by-law'invalid'.
