NEW DIVING PIER
AT ISLAND BAY.
The new diving pier which has Uen j erected by the Uity Council at Island | Bay, and which is to be § opened by a swimming carni- | val to' be held on Saturday, March | 2, should prove to bo a source of at- jj traction to followers of the natatorial | art in Wellington. Hitherto there | have been no facilities at this bay for f| diving, unlets bathers plunged in from ± a boat. This lack has been ingenious- | ly supplied by the erection of a diving | pier, unconnected with the shorn, erect- | ed in the water 120 feet out from low 6 water mark opposite "'the ladies' _dress- i ing shed, near the end of Beef Street. The pier which is new nearly ready,' ] is a hardwood structure, 24ft. long t and Bft. in width, supported on eight | stout hardwood pile.-;, and having at the j outer end a spring-board projecting j eight feet from the pier. All risers' of the pier will, of necessity, have to he | swimmers, as at the shore end of the j pier (where the ascending ladder is | fixedl the depth of water at low tide | is about Oft. , j The aalfl on the occasion of the open- > ins of the pier will be on a large scale, i with olentv of anvusement for both j children and adults. The special items s on the programme will be fancy diving by Leslie Errington, and a two mile fishermen's boat race. All entries for the events will be free, and will be open to all amateur swimmers.
