A Press Association cablegram from London states that Sir William Mercer has been appointed chairman of the Pacific Cable Board. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.

Mr. William John Douglas, of To Mahanga, Hawke's Bay, who liad been ailing for some time, died on Saturday morning at the age of 48. On succeeding his father, the late Mr. Douglas devoted all his energy to making ,Te Mahanga an ideal station, -jetties devoting great attention to the lire-cJmjr of racing and purebred stock, for which he was well known throughout New Zealand.

Several transfers and promotions in the personnel of the Palmerston Post Office are notified. Mr. F. E. f W. Cowing, delivery counter clerk, Wellington, is to be cliief mail clerk Mr. A. F. Wimsett, senior mail clerk, Palmerston, is to bo chief mail clerk; Mr. A. F. V. Harris, clerk in charge of messent'eri, Wellington, is to be head of mail staff, No. 2; and Mr. H. Newson, foreman linesman, is promoted to assistant overseer at Palmfl'ston. There is also another position of records clerk—a new appointment —which has not yet been Riled. Captain Robert Macfarlane Murie, one time well known in the bicycle trade in Invercargill, and also noted for his balloon ascents a decade ago, is now attached to the Royal Engineers.
