POULTRY NOTES
(By Chanticleer.)
A Progiiossive industry. Eight years ago, when the New ,Zealand Poultry Association was inaugurated, the promoters hail the usual obstacles to surmount usually" attendant on "such" ventures. These men were not dismayed. They had eoniideuee in the poultry industry, and were assured of the commercial possibilities before it, and were not disappointed with slow progress. Success has followed every conference, aud Ihe eighth, to be held at Wellington, gives promise of greater value than any of its predecesßorß. For a time progress was slow, but gradually the active membership anrl the affiliated societies increased, until today the association is the mouthpiece of over 2000 poultrymen. Tho aim of the association hits been to enlist the support of any individual, society, or club that shows an interest in the development of the poultry industry. It does not seek to interfere with the conduct of any club or society, but in return for its affiliation, aims to improve the industry to the mutual advantage of all. One -significant feature has been the many advantages enjoyed by those who do not support it. It'has long been the desire of the association to incorporate the help of the fanciers' clubs, and one can easily imagine what increased powers the) association would have if every poultry club would attach itself to the New Zealand Poultry Association. There have been obstacles in the way. The North and South Island Poultry Associations liavo had a I competitior in the field in the form of a . championship association, and, nnfortun- j ately, matters among the fanciers have, not i run smoothly. Tho Championship Asso- j ciation recognised the help thoy could jriva i the New Zealand Poultry Association and i ■ loined in their forces and have given valuable help.. .Recently the North, and South Island Poultry Associations made an Oder to recognise tho Championship Association providing it adhered to certain territory in the Dominion, and did not encroacfi on the work done by the North and .South Island Association. Unfortunately, 'they have not so far come to terms, so ; matters remain unsettled and the asso- { ciations concerned cannot work to-j gether for mutual good. On this atti- ■■ tudo it is not our bnsines to oomment, WTiat wo want to impress-is the great assistance the North and South Island Associations could give the New Zealand Poultry Asocfation if they would affiliate. Hero we would have at leaßt 2000 or 3CCO moire members represented. . When, a few years ago, we forecasted that tlie New Zealand Poultry Association would represent, 5000 members, we were considered too optimistic. How near 'that possibility is and how easily such a position could be achieved,! It simply requires a recognition of tho great help the North and-. South Island Associations could be to our conferences to enable them to take the Btep. Tho timo has now come, as MivE. J. Boss Baid at Ohrißtchurch recently,: that, thero should be no two distinct 1 classes in our poultry shows, but all exhibits would bo characterised by beauty and -utility, founded on one common standard. That position has dawned. A few years and the old spirit, which exists between the two will bo effectually bnried. This being so.'Mt .iß'-'notf'the duty of the North and South Island faucicrß to combine in on.e splendid effort and affiliate, with the New Zealand Poultry Association for the betterment of the. poultry industry in which all are interested. In tho matter of food suppliers, organisation of markets, Government assistance and the conduct of poultry shows, we stand on a common basis. The Government look to tho New Zealand .Poultry Association to be the. mouthpiece of tho industry, and with tho co-operation of such forces as we have in Che North and South, a much stronger force would result. The . conduct of the shows could be and would bo relegated to those associations that have the matter in. hand, but in the 'matter of the commercial progress of the industry, those forccs could be united and present one grand front. Now i# tiro time' for unity, and it is our sincere wish that thoso in power in their associations will give; the subject their fullest consideration, for the. ultimate success-of all concerned, ,y;' EGG-LAYING N.Z.
