WOMAN'S WORLD
(Continued from Page 4) ROYAL NAVY PRISONERS OF WAR APPEAL FOR HELP. An appeal has'been received by Mrs. Hall-Thompson (president of the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Navy League) from the Ladies' Emergency Committee of the Navy League, 56 Queen. Anno. Street, London, for assistance for our lloyal Navy prisoners of war in Germany and elsewhere. As is well known, British prisoners hayo suffered untold privations and hardships at the hands of the Germans, and lately some very terrible accounts have appeared of the sufferings of our. men at the hands of the Turks. People in New Zealand can do very much to relieve these prisoners' sufferings, which are made still more acute by the shortage of food which prevails everywhere in European countries. How they can assist is shown in the following cirfcular issued by the Ladies' Emergency Committee, London:— "These are supplies we send to every E.N. prisoner in Germany: Throe 101b. parcels in the fortnight; weekly bread from Copenhagen, weekly .tobacco or cigarettes; £1 quarterly pocket-money. As parcels rarely reach our men in Turkey, wo make a weekly 10s. payment-to each prisoner there. With this he can buy food to add to the prisoner's fare. But as| provisions aro very costly in Asia Minor (tea is 18s. a lb.), we dispatch a ill parcel of foodstuffs monthly to each Wan. l '±!4 4s. is spent on every R.N. prisoner in the four weeks, whether we receive special contributions for him or not. This is exclusive of clothing. Underwear of the best quality ttoes to each man every six months, and we forward all outside clothing, including boots. Games and books have gone to all our camps. Will you not adopt 'a Royal Navy prisoner. of war? £1. Is. is the full adoption'rata weekly, but a-, weekly Bs. 6d. adopts a man. You would have his name, and your name wculd go to him. Or would you pay his bread, us. monthly, or his 'smokes'? Do help the men of the Royal Navy." The Navy League Ladies' Auxiliary (Wellington) will be very pleased to supply any information that may he required. Y;W.C.A. GIRLS' COLLEGE
QUESTION OF ACCOMMODATION.
Tho vexed question of the accommodation, or ratner lack of accommodation, at the Wellington Girls' College was again the subject of mention at yesterday's meeting of the High School Board of Governors.
The chairman (the Hon. J. G. W. Aitken, M.L.C.) said that moßt of those present had paid a visit to • the college, and had seon the necessity for increased accommodation for freeplace pupils. The secretary had been instructed to advertise and had one reply—from a firm of agents—offering a lease of premises over a shop at the corner of Molesworth and Hawkestone Streets.
The general impression amongst members was that these premises would not be suitable, and the chairman suggested that the matter should be referred to a small committee to get the accommodation as soon as possible; they did not want to leave the matter over for a month. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) agreed with the urgency of the matter, and urged that the committee should have power to act. This was agreed to, and the chairman, the Mayor, Professor Easterfield, and Mr. Ward were appointed the committee. For the Scottish Women's Hospital, Dr. Bennett will lecture for the Scottish Women's Hospitals at Concert Chamber on Tuesday next. Some, interesting headings recur in the synojv sis, such as "Work of the _5.W.H.," "The Serbs and Their Origin," "The Coniitadji Country," etc. Lantern slides will be shown of winter war work in the Balkans, of peasant life, results of air raids, work of the hospital, etc. The title of the lecture is "With Our Allies in the Balkans," and it •is hoped by the organisers of the lecture that there will be a good attendance -for the good of thecKuse —that or relieving the terrible distress of this greatly-afflicted people.
The raffle which was organised for the Victoria League Day at the Wellington Red Cross Shop has been drawn, and the winning numbers will be seen in our advertising columns. As a result of the raffle '£10 Bs. has been realised.:
At the packing day of the Countess of Liverpool Fund Committee, held in the Town Hall on Thursday, over 2000 gift parcels were packed ready to send to the men at the front. Of these 500 will be forwarded to Egypt.
Miss Gladys Campbell's classes for dancing, fencing, deportment, and calisthenics are resuming. Miss Campbell has kept in touch with all the latest movements in the dancing world, and secured her dinloma_ as • a teacher of dancing and calisthenics at Mrs. Wordsworth's School of Dancing, London. Miss C'iiinnbell qualified as a teacher of the classic dance, for correspondents from that school. Recent mails indicate that so much is thought of classic dancing to-day that no teacher can expcct to obtain a post in the schools of dancing unless she has qualified as an expert in the art.
