Extensive repairs are now being oatried out at the signal station at North Head, Kaipara Harbour, and the balls and semaphore signalß cannot be UEed to guide ships over the bar. All bar signals will bo made until further notice by the international code of signals shown from the lower mast of the signal etaff. An electric light lias been installed/on the Railway Wharf at Picton Harbour, and vessels will now be signalled to their herfh by a red or green light., shown from the same post as ths fhod red light on the end of the wharf. The red light will indicate that the berth is on the west side of the wharf and the green light on tlio east side. SOUTHERN COASTAL TRADE. The auxiliary schooner May Howard, which had been laid up at Auckland for many months paßt wiU shortly enter the Dunedin-Bluff cargo trade. The May Howard, however, is to have a competitor. The auxiliary schooner Dolly Varden, which has been laid up at Bluff for some time, will also enter the Dunedin-Bluff-Timaru-Oamaru trade very shortly. This veßßel -was formerly engßged in the Bluff fishinu industry. She ie at present being refitted at Bluff, and will probably arrive at Dunedin in a few days. T*'e Dolly Varden is am auxiliary schooner of 29 tons gross register, and will carry about 50 tons of cargo. The schooner Gisborne, which was purchased somo time ago by a local syndicate, is at present undergoing alterations at" the Dunedin wharf. Nothing definite has yet been decided in regard to the Gisborne. but the vessel will, in all probability, enter the southern coastal trade. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. A. G. Wilson, sixth engineer on a Union Oompauy's' steamer, has been relieved by Mr. H. Beck. Mr. Locke, chief engineer on a Union Company's steamer, has come ashore on holiday leave. The Putiki will arrivo to-n:,ght from Lyttolton and to-morrow will sail for Wanganui. After discharging at that port she will sail with sheep direct, for Lyttelton. Tho Mann, will dear port to-day for Wanganui, returning on Sunday. On Monday she is to sail for Wanganui.

The time-table of the John has been altered, and now the vessel will Bail tomorrow direct for Dunedin. She will lake general cargo. The Defender arrived yesterday, and after the discharge of her cargo of timber will probably go to Wanganui to load Bheep The Union Company's hulk Belle Isle, which is in the dock for repairs, will oome out on Saturday io as to enable the Mararoa to dock on Monday morning. This is the first time the Belle Isle haß been in dock for clove l yearß, and It was only on account of her continual heavy leaking that it was fonna necessary to dock her :statos the "Sun"). The schooner Lily, which was sold for a good figure to Mr. A. P. F. Watson, of the Addington Iron Rollins Mills, is at present fully loaded at the Gladstone Pier, Lyttelton (says the "Sun"), and has been laid up at that berthage for .the last three or four years on account of a ihortage of four seamen. It ib understood that'tho freight charges go with the price paid for the ship. The Lily, which is a very fast little ship, of 92 tons, has been under command of Captain Bloom, her present master, for the last 28 years, and he will continue at the helm in the interests of the new owners Last Thursday morning saw the highest tide at New Plymouth since the tide guage has been installed at the.breakwater.
