niEETING OF THE COUNCIL

The. Wellington City Council mot last evening. The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) presided, and there were present also Councillors W. H. P. Barber, G. Frost, J. Godber, W. H. Bonnett, A. 11. Atkinson, A. Veitch, L. M'Kenzie, J. 0. Shorland, J. Castle; It, A. 'Wright, W. T. Hildreth, J. E. Fitzgerald. The Mayor left during the meeting to attend another function, and Councillor Barber took the chair.

It -was resolved that certain petitioners who had requested that im» provemeifts be effected to the approach of private properties in Kelburn Parade be informed that the work required is of no public benefit, but that if they will pay the cost of the work the council will carry out the work at the earliest oy/portunity. The' council decided: "That a property owner at Moxliam Avenue bo informed in reply to his request for the culvertiug of that portion of Mosham Avenue stream from the point between Boa Street and the Chinese gardens that this portion of the culvert cannot be constructed first. In view of certain improvements which havo been made to the culvert in Moxham Avenue and the widening of the stream iu front of Mr.' Jorgenson's property, considerable benefit should be v deriyed by ownerß of property; further up tho stream." ' The charge for direct current power supplied to the Harbour Board is to be increased to 3Jd. per' unit for the •day load, and Hd. .per unit for the night load, owing to tho increased cost of generation. The Beaches Committee reported:— "That, in consequence of complaints received from the Island Bay Municipal Electors' 'Association with respect to a. nuisance caused by fish offal at Island Bay, thev have' sent a letter to the fishermen at the bay, calling their attention fo the matter, and informing them that, unless their promise to cause no nuisance by their industry is faithfully carried, out, drastic action will be 'necessary in the_ direction of framing stringent regulations controlling the beach "and landing place, and which will probably have the effect of curtailing some of the privileges at present enioved by the fishermen. The resolution exempting- Rolleston Street from' the provisions of Section 117 of the Public Works Act, 1908. passed at the meeting of the council held on November 1, was modified to ex'cludo the portion of the_ street distant one chain back from its junction with Wallace Street.
