WHITE PINE TIMBER
RESERVED FOR DAIRY INDUSTRY. By Telcßraph.-Prcss Association. Hokitika, February 20. The Westland Chamber of Commerce had under consideration last night a, direction issued by the Government to' Commissioners of Lamia and Wardens arranging that when granting timbercutting leases or licences a stipulation be made that no white pine timber shall be exported from the Dominion, but shall be reserved for the purposes of the New Zealand dairying industry exclusively. Strong objection was taken to the course proposed. It was stated that prohibition was being irregularly enforced, and was contrary to the recommendations of the Forestry Commission and the evidence tendered to the Board of Trade on the subject. It was resolved to ask the Government to withdraw the instructions to officers, and a sub-committep was set up to prepare reasons in support of this request. It was also decided to ask other chambers to co-operato in pointing out tlie great waste, as well as thb increased cost, that would result, and that under the stringent regulations the timber was not available for fruitgrowers.
