MASTERTON NOTES
On January 31 the credit balance of the Wounded Soldiers' Fund in connection with the Wairarapa Patriotic Association amounted, to £69,341. Tho Masterton Chamber of Commerce has decided to use its influence to defeat the proposal to erect a tollgate on the Masterton-Castlepomt Road. , ,- , ~ ■ The art'union for the linen chest, valued at £60, presented by Mrs. J. D. Buchanan, in aid of the Trench Comforts Fund, was drawn on Saturday night, and was won by Mrs. M'Master, of Lower Valley. A gala tlav is to bo held on taster Monday, with a view to endeavouring to wipe-off the debit on the instruments of the Masterton Municipal Silver Band. The debit amounts to'£326 18s. 4d. The Minister of Internal Affairs has refused to grant permission for tho holding of a draught horse race attho • Masterton Show, in aid of the patriotic funds, notwithstanding that no prize money is'attached to the event. At a meeting of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce on Friday, the inconvenience caused to mail contractors and I others by the shortage of benzine was discussed, and it was resolved: "That the executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce be asked to bring under the notice of the Minister of Munitions the urgent necessity of action being taken to conserve the petrol supplyfor the essential industries of the Dominion." The postmaster has advised the Masterton Chamber of Commerce that the question of installing coin-in-the-s!ot telephones has been deferred until the automatic svstem is in operation. The Masterton Chamber of Commerce has endorsed a resolution by the South Canterbury Chamber, endorsing the policy indicated by the Prime Minister in regard to the disposal of the German colonies in the Pacific. The chamber has also expressed sympathy with the Manawatu County Council in its protest agaiiist the railway ppbey in respect te race trains, which imposes a heavy toll upon the roads cf local'authorities.
A display of eucalyptus seeds suitable for the district is to be made at the Masterton Show by the local branch of the Farmers' Union.
One hundred and twenty members of the Masterton A. and P. Association have enlisted for service abroad or for home service. Twelve members have made the supreme sacrifice.
Owing to tho date fixed being considered unsuitable, the Featherston County, Featherston Borough Council, aiul Martinhorongb .Town Board will not be represented at the conference convened for to-day at Masterton by the Castlepoint Council to discuss the proposed apportionment of levies towards the erection of a new bridge over the Waingawa River.
