MAGISTRATE'S COURT
POMOE AND MAINTENANCE OASES.
Mr. S. E. M'Oarthy, S.M., presided over a sitting of the Magistrate's Court yesterday and dealt with 'the police' and maintenance cases.
For insobriety two firab offenders were convicted and fined 10a. each, iu default 24 hours' imprisonment, and another, who failed to appear, had his bail of 20s. estreated..
Maud Page, for whom Mr. E. M. Bcechey appeared, proceeded against John H. Pago to find sureties for the due payment of £1 per week under a maintenance order made on December 17, 1917, the arrears amounting to £9. Mr. P. W. Jackson, who appeared for tho defendant, said that Page was in Dunedin. where he had gone to obtain work. He had remitted £2 and had promised to pay that amount each week until tho arrears were paid. It would bo difficult for hiin, being a stranger in Dunedin. to find sureties. His Worshin said tho man appeared to be shifty and no reliancn could be placed on his promises. Defendant, was ordered to enter into a bond of £250, and to find two sureties of £125 each for the fulfilment of tb'e order. Three wneks were allowed in which to find sureties.
