CASES HEARD YESTERDAY
The Third Wellington Military Service Board sat yesterday. Mr. D. M. Findlay presided, and had with him Mr. A. O'L. Coniidine and Mr. M. J. Mack. Captain P. Baldwin was the military representative. , Exemption sine die was granted to the following marine officers and engineers, on the appeal of the U.S.S. Company ;.- James Eankine, master; James Baldwin, master; John Maclean, master; Arthur Charles Showman, master; Joseph Lyall Brisco, first officer; Robert Henry Stewart, first officer; Victor Gordon Webb, first officer; Selwyn Athol Chatfield, first officer; Wm. Henry Harrison, second officer; Kenneth Gordon Don, third officer; Eobert Michael Scott, third officer; William Harms, marine officer; belwyn Frank Horn, marine superintendent; Frank M'Conville, marine engineer; Joseph Cable, marine engineer. leave until Juno was granted to William George Wilkinson, a member oi the Wellington Fire Bripule, Superintendent Tait said that the brigade could not spare any more of its experienced men. Exemption sino die was grnpted Duncan M'Gillivray, tramway traffic manager, who was represented oy Mr. i. Oanea (City Solicitor). The appeal had been made by the Tramways, Department on the ground that M'Gillivray was an export who conld not bo replaced, and whose services were essential to the successful operation of the city tramways. G. H. J. Aitken aad E. 0. Hooker, prison warders, were granted exemption sine die, on the application of the Inspector, of Prisons. , ,' . The Gear Meat Company (Mr. Tripe) i appealed on behalf of Wilfred H. Spalton, butcher and shopman. It was slated that the company had already parted with many of its trained men, and could not replace Spalton. The board adjourned the enso for four months. ShoTt periods of leave wcto granted in the cases of John 0. Coope, refrigerating engineer in the employ of the Wellington Meat Export Company; S. G. Woon, officer in charge of Dalgety and Co.'s merchnndiso department, Wanganui: Norman Wilton, slaughterman, Neil M"Lauehlnn, steward; L. H. Boecker, tham conductor, Newtown; A. 0. Shaw, clerk, Wellington; N. V. Mills, merchant tailor, Petone; D. L. Shierin, driver, Kelburn.

Archibald Telfer, Joseph Kamsay, Bobert Edward Hayden, Frederick Patience, Percy Hubert Hayward. Charles Humphreys, E. ft. A mother's appeal was heard in the ease- of' William Charles Cook, marineengineer. Mrs. Cook stated that her son was just twenty years of ape. and not long out of his apprenticeship. Two sons were serving, a son-in-law had been killed/ in- action, and a' third eon had heen rejected on medicnl grounds. The board granted leave for two months, Cook to take work as a marine engineer in the meantime.
Suspension, sine din was granted to Henry E. Harvey, butter factory manager, Ohutu. The appeal was made bv tho employers, on the ground that Harvey was an expert, who could not bo replaced. l !

Skerrett, who nppeared for the company; said the appeal was not a personal one. Jacobs was fit and willing to serve, but his employers wished to urce that ho was an essential worker. Jacobs was the mnna?er of the firm's Gl.iso department, and the total output of Gliwn bad lieen rnmmandeered by the Imperial Government. Messrs. Natlmn and Co. bad sent .12 men into camp out of a staff of 93, and had paid half wages in all cases.
Jacobs, in cvidencp, said ]i B took no part in the manufacture of Glaxo. He superintended supplies for- the factories. Production would continue unchecked if lie went away, hut nn inexperienced man would find if difficult to.handle, the nrohlems of finance, transport, and supply. The chairman said the hoard was influenced in its decision by the value of fllnxo to the Imperial authorities. Jacobs's case would ho adjourned sine ,die. on condition Hint no appeal wag wiado for another man in the same department who had been called up.
