THE WELLINGTON SOUTH CLUB.
Tho annual championship tournament of the Wellington. South Club will commence this. week. Tho eight competitors are Messrs. G. P. Anderson (present champion), Purclias (ex-cham-pion), Welton, Harper, Clark, W. Armstrong (president), H. J. Thompson, and Berry. If all the competitors play up to their best form this contest for She club's 1918 championship should bo an exceptionally close one. A dozen players, drawn from the three local clubs, have entered for the problem-solving contest, to be held rext Saturday evening, under the ;-uspices of the Good Companion Chess Problem Club o$ America. Each competitor will be supplied with a sheet <;ii winch twelve "two-move" problems are printed, and will be allowed two hours and a half for solving tho problems. He may solve from the diagram or use chess material. There are five "book" prizes. Mr. C. W. Tanner, president of the Wellington Club, has consented to act as supervisor. It is nearly twenty years since a problem-solving contest was held in this city, and a pod deal of interest is consequently being taken by local enthusiasts in the coining lixtnre.
