NOTES AND COMMENTS
[BY GLENCOE.I
A final reminder is given that up till 9.30 p.m. acceptances will be received £or the ffangauui Meeting, which .takes place on 1-hm-aday and Saturday of this week. At llawera last week Henry Clay was oltered for Bale, but was passed in when bidding reached 120gns. . Whou Heathercote won the Dunedin Champagne Stakes, he credited Sir Geo. OliHord with his twelfth bucccsb iu that race.
I The Masterton owned Multicipal failed badly in his Dunedin engagements, and on neither day did he fill a place. With tho exception of Torfreda, who was in front at the finish of the Juvenile Handicap on Saturday, none of the North Island horses showed up at all. . Nobleman .is an unlikely starter in the ■Wanganui Oup. The Endeavour Lodge candidates, MeneVaus, Seadown, and Cooing, are being railed to Wanganui to-day. • Wieliful's half-brother Dry Up (Demos. thenes-Drought) is to be a runner in the Juvenile Handicap at ■Wanganui. On the Wanganui tracks on Friday Biplane ran half a mile in 495e0., which was easily the best gallop of the morning. S'ujiy Eve,'in charge of-T. Clarke, has already arrived at Wanganui to fulfil hia engagements in the hack events at tho coming meeting. Form' Up, who is to be a runner in the Flying Handicap, and Silver Black, who is to race in the hack events, are being railed from Hastings to Wanganui to-day. Three 1 trotting horses, the property of Mr. B. Shadbolt, of .Napier, are being shipped to Blenheim to-day, and will compete .at the Marlborough Trotting Club'B Meeting on Wednesday. The Desert Gold campaign in Australia has opened auspiciously, and on Saturday, at Oaulfield, the champion inare silenced Cetigne and Wallace Isinglass, in the St. George's Stakes, nine fur. longs. Mr. Lowry's mare will next appear in ■ the Oaulfield Futririty Stakes, seven furlongs, of 3000 sovs. This event will be decided on Saturday next. The apprentice N. M'DbnncH was suepeuded for a month at Hawera for giving unsatisfactory evidence at the inquiry into some bumping which took place in' the Atkinson Memorial Stakes, won by Volo. In addition to the success of Desert Gold, New Zealand-bred, horses got. another advertisement at Caulfield. on Saturday by the victory of Kilflinn in the Salisbury Welter Handicap. After unexpectedly defeating Desert Gold in tho North Island Challenge Stakes last yeary the. Kilbroney fllly was sold at a big figure to the Rajah of Pudukota. This was her first success in her new owner's colours. She is still trained by 11. Hobbe, who is now located at Oaulfield. A Wanganui paper states that the ac commodation hooked , for Hymebtra ha« been cancelled, and the colt is an unlikely stnrter at this -week's meeting. Since he wont amise when beinor trained
at Riccarton Marc Anthony has been in- 1 dulgihir in a lot of 6wimming exercise in tho estuary.' On Thursday last when in th,c water he got away from his atten. danl and made for Cno rocks near Burns'a jetty, a very dangerous landing-place. Aβ he conld not be got- ashore there he wan headed across the channel for the mud flats, and there was nearly bogged. After a lot of trouble the horso wbb brought back to the Sumner side and managed to land little the worse' for hie adventure. which at one tlnw threatened t£ be attended with serious consequences. .
?fr. T. H. Lowry headed tho list of winning owners at the Egmont meeting, his cheque amounting to £730. Thirty-three years ago R Derrett rode Ynnguard to victory in the Dunedin Cup, and on Thursday he led Margerinc in, after winning the ?ame race.
Sfartian's sUn'k have heon puttine , up pood performances in important races this enapon. It will be remembered that three of his representatives—Mcnelaiis, Johnny Walker, and Snub-filled thepWes in the New 55"abnd Cur. and last week and Wflrdancer credit'd .him with flrsfc and pecond in the Dunwlin Ohp Tt ii intcrpitinc to r.oto Hint Stnr«li< the dnra o< , Mar"-inn. -.von the l)»n----cdin Cim in 1898. while Ftepdnnoer. the dnni of Wn rflance'', Ftif.ces?fiil in that event in 1906. and agnin in 1907.
