DISTRICT REPORTS. (From Our Own Correspondents.) Feathereton, February 16.—Saining heavily. GroytOTro, February 16.—Steady rain, Masterton, February 16—Showery.

In addressing a jury engaged in a criminal trial at the Auckland Supreme Court on Thursday, Mr. Justice Stringer said he desired to impress on members That it was the duty of a jury merely to detormino the guilt or otherwise of an accused person on tlie evidence adduced, nnd not on any ether consideration. He had a growing feeling that juries sometimes allowed outside considerations to influence them in arriving at a verdict. That should not be so. Outsido circumstances, no matter how slender or for what reason they were introduced, should have no effect on the minds of jurors, otherwise tho value of evidence was lost. Excitemont wns caused on the Sandringham Beach, Melbourne, on a recent afternoon, when a shark seven feet long came in to the shore. When tho alarm ivas given thero was a rush for safety, but one man, when within six feet of the beach, was knocked off his feet by a wave, and at the same instant the shark threw itself out of the water and snapped at his body. The shark missed its intended victim by a few inches, and lay floundering on the beach, lasliing the water into foam with its tail. Protfiing by the momentary delay, the bather, too exhausted to stand, crawled into safety on his hands and knees. The shark wriggled back into the water.
