EX-SOLDIER'S APPEAL
WANTED TO .BE A POLICEMAN. An ex-soldier of.the old 'British Army appeared before; the Third Weihngton. Military Service Board yesterday to mate an appeal for exemption. He ivas Edwin Barnsley, holder-up in the employ of-the Railway Department! He stated'that lie had five brothers, three in England ah'd two'members of the New Zealand' Expeditionary Force. He liimself had served in the Imperial Army for twelve years, and he objected' ,to fight again because he diel not-think that he had been treated properly. : ■ "I have'hot had the chances otheV people 1 have' had," said Bamsley in explanation. He. had fought in Africa-, and had then served in India.' Later he was discharged in London, and he tried to/get employment through .the Labour Bureau. for - Discharged - Soldiers, but ■ lie could not get the job he wanted; -The authorities-said he was too old to' be a policeman, and so he came to New Zealand. "I had done mybit for, the country, and. the country should have found me a job," said the appellant. In answer to questions; Barnsley Baid that it was.because he thought the Imperial authorities had treated him badly in the days before the war that ho objected to serving with the New Zealand Forces. His age was 38 years. He did not think he would be treated any better this time than he ha-fl been before. The chairman said that appellant had a good military record, and could be congratulated upon it. But his appeal could not be granted. Barnsley then produced a letter stating that the Railway Department was appealing on. his behalf. . The chairman said the board had received no communication from the Department on the subject. The appeal would have to be dismissed.
