The schooner May Howard, which has been anchored in the stream at Auckland for some years, has been "iold to a Dunedin syndicate. The vessel is nowbeing overhauled, in readiness for her trip south. Before being put out of commission the May Howard ran for a number of years in the Auckland coastal trade, chiefly to Hokianga. She is a wooden vessel of 50 tons net register, and was built at Brisbane Water, N.S.W.. in 1886. At present she is fitted with a CO horsepower oil engine. It is the intention of I her new owner-.- to Dlacc her in the Dun-edin-Invercargill-Riverton trade, the bulk of which at present is handled by the Kotaro. Captain W. Cameron, of Dunedin, is to take the vessel south as soon as she is ready. A shortage of labour on the waterside at Lyttelton has delayed tho Calm, and Bhe is now not due at Wellington until to-morrow morning. She will load cargo for Wanganui, from which, port she will proceed to Lyttelton. The harbourmaster at. Patea reported at the last meeting of the Harbour Board that the bar was straight, bearing S.W. by S.JS., with about 10ft. 6m. at high water spring tides, and about 7ft. Sin. at neap tides. The bar was souaded on January 14. wheu there was lift., with 9ft. 6in. on the gauge. The bar was also sounded on January 23, with the result that there wa6 to be found 10ft. 6in„ with 9ft. on the gauge. All alow? the eastern •wall there was plenty of water until the end was reached, when the water shoals as the reading? show. There were 16 arrivals aud 18 departures during January, nine going out on the liKhts. The Annie Hill, which lias been laid up in Lyttelton for the past three years, and which was sold to 'Mr. J. D. Bobertson about three months ago,-was wit on to the Blips on Wednesday for an inspection to ascertain whether Blie will be fit for sea again. If she is passed by the inspectors Bhe will take up the running between Kaiapoi and Lyttelton. Otherwise she will (says the "Sun") most likely be converted into a coal hulk. Owing to the necessity at the present time of economising in food supplies (says "Fairplay"), the Ministry of Food are issuiug regulations which will tend to re-, duce ships' stores supplied to British, Allied, and neutral vessels in this country to an absolute minimum, while British owners are to be .requested to take as much on board at foreign ports as possible; any surplus to be handed over to the authorities at cost nrice; while, ir such storeß are reouircd for another vessel of tho Bame line at another port, facilities will be afforded by the Customs authorities to have them sent there, in order to reduce the quantity to be purchased in this country.
