MIXED GRAZING

An appeal for both flocks and herds —mixed grazing—was made by Mr. John M'ljtieen, the veteran farmerfieezer, at "the animal meeting of the Southland Frozen Meat Company. It was good farming to carry both sheep and cattlc, lie said. With sheep alone, their pasture ran out sooner, and they were more likely to over-stock. If tliey had both, they could watch that the cattle did not starve. Then the sheep would look after themselves. Except for the provision of winter feed, they would not require to break up thoir pasture nearty si> often—unless because of the "rass grub. Then sheep would, on an abundance of pasture, go solely for the leaves of the grass, and allow it to run to seed. To •,stop that cattle had to be turned.on. On the other hand, the need was sometimes for sheep to replace the cattlc. Recently lie had been out.at Edendale a place .the farmer of. which should bo prosecuted in his own interests. Only cattle were running on it, although the place was in a fearful state with ragwort. They could make more money from cattle and sheep together than from one or the other alone, concluded Mr. M'Queen, and he held that in the interests of their company and of the Dominion they should. seriously consider the question.
