RED TRIANGLE APPEAL DAY
COMFORTS FOR SOLDIERS. A further meeting of the General Committee winch was organised early 111 the week in connection with the Y.M.C.A. Red Trianprle appeal for funds for New Zealand soldiers 011 active service was held in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall yesterday afternoon. Tito Mayoress (Mrs. J. 1. Luke) presided. Mr. A. Varncy (secretary of the Y.M.C.A.') co-operating with her in dealing with ihe business of the afternoon, which, consisted principally in electing an executive committee and also in discussing ways and means for the raising of funds prior to the great effort arranged for March 15. In outlining these objects 'Mrs. Luke thought it would be desirable that the Executive Committee should he formed of representatives of the various women's organisations in Wellington engaged in patriotic work. Of these there were the Red Cross, the Countess of Liveroool Fund, tlio Women's National Reserve, the Citizens' Service League, the Y.W.C.A.. the Ladies Auxiliary>of the Y.M.C.A., the Catholic Women's Knitting Guild, the Ambulance Brigade, and the Spinsters' Club. Mr. Varney brought forward a resolution to this effect, and stated that every effort was needed as it was now becoming increasinglv difficult to raise funds. Letters which he had received from men at the front emphasised the "l-nat need of doing all that was 110s'piblfl for them in view of the hardships they were enduring. He suggested that these societies be consulted aiul asVj*ci to choose their representatives. The motion was carried. Tt was further promised, to form an inner executive, and tlio following were plotted:—Mrs. Mnssev, Mrs. Luke. Lady Ward. Mrs. W. D. Stewart, Mrs. Low, and Mrs. D. J. Nathan. Mr. Varney suggested that the appeal should be carried but on lines similar to those on which the "Our Day" appeal (Red Cross) was organised. including side-shows of all kinds. He had ordered 100,000 buttons from Sydney for selling purposes, would also he badges of very eifoctive designs which would be sold at different prices according to value, also brooches. Snowball teas and various other forms of entertainment as a means of gathering in money were suggested, Mrs. Luke encouraging every effort 110 matter how small. It was stated bv Mrs. Luke that Mr. Malini bad offered to give bis services at anv afternoon that, might be organised for patriotic work, Much appreciation of this offer was expressed, and arrangements for such a gathering are now being ronsidered. Tt was proposed at the meeting, seconded, and carried that Mrs. Onx, who has already done much valuable secretarial work in connection with patriotic efforts, be apDointed secretary. Mr. Va.ruev stated that a room 111 Baker's Buildings had been placed at their disposal.for committee meetings. Among the apologies for unavoidable absence which were received were those from Mrs. W.
