The New Zealand Iron and Steel Compuuy's auxiliary scnooner llouto left Duneitiu yesterday afternoon direct lor Wellington. A general cargo will be discharged here on completion of which she will sail for Westport. The Blenheim will sail to-day for Picton, taking cargo for that port aud Bleuheim. Messrs. G. T. Hull and Co. advise that the Putiki is due at Wellington to-mor-row at'tsrnoan from Lyttelton, and will sail ou Saturday for Nelson. Tho John is due hero on Sunday from southern ports and is to sail on Monday for Wanganui, from where she will return to Wellington, on her way south. The ffaiaieiv is due here on Sunday from Tarakohe and will sail on Monday for Nelson aud West Coast. The L'niou Company advieo6 that a cargo steamer is likely to leave Auckland about Saturday for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Bluli. After discharging at Petone on Saturday a load of sheep from Picton, the Kennedy will come to the town wharves to load for Westhaven. Cargo will be received till noon. The Kaituna will come oil the Blip tomorrow morning after receiving minor repairs, and will sail for the West Coast. The shipwrights have lost no time in commencing opcratidns to convert the hulk Lilla into a cargo steamer. The work of unloading the scrap-iron ballast, which the vessel took from Wellington, was started ou Monday, in preparation for the enginoers, who will commence their task of installing the Opouri'B engines aud ironfittings into, tho hulk about the middle of the weclt. The work is under the supervision of Mr. Ilawson, a Sydney ship. Wright. The Opawa will arrivo this afternoon from Blenheim and to-morrow will bo on tho slip for inspection, aud, if necessary, general overhaul. The "Scientific American" says that of the many methods of marine camouflage either tried out or suggested, two aro most promising. These two aro known as the British and Mackny systems. In the former tho camouflage artist paintß out all shadows and softens or destroys all outlines, and the entire superstructure is painted a sky blue or some other colour which blends with the horizon. In this mnnner, if the work is carried out with skill and patience, the vessel is indistinct cvou a short distance away; especially if the submarine commander 'is making his observations through a peri, scope. Tn the Maekay systoni the camouflage takes the form of a leopard-spot design, so that all outlines are broken up hy tho blotchy coat of paint, and parts of the vePEel are even painted with wavy lines, so as to match with the surrounding water, Clever feats of camouflage en-
able vessels to appear mucli sliorler than they arc, tending to deceive ihe U-ihuu marksmen to a. creator or Icsh degree. In the same class is the painting of fake how waves which give the vessel the appearance or travelling along lit a high rate of speed when it may be considerably slowed down. In this case the U-boat commander, understanding his intended victim's speed, in likely to send his torpedoes considerably in front of the steamer aimed at. Mr. E. G.. F. Zohrab advise that the Calm will not arrive at Wellington from southern ports until to-morrow morning. She will receive cargo for Wanganui and sail in the evening. Mr. 0. Ttitson has joined the Patccna as third engineer. Mr. li. L. Sweet, seventh engineer on the Maori, has come ashore on sick leave, and his place has been taken by Mr. li. W. Eon.
