NOTES AND COMMENTS rut giibncoe.i The Dunedin Mooting will open at Wingatui to-day. The principal event is the Cup, which has drawn an acceptance of oighteen. Devotion and Wardancer are popular in the south, but Adjutant is euro to run well, and if ho hafl gone on the right way flincc the Wellington Cup Meeting it ia difficult to aeo how Devotion can reverse the plncings here with him. San Sebastian and Luff are the best known in the Hurdloß, but aB the former is ao unreliable the Dunedin public may prefer the charma of tho consistent Luff, who will be ridden by J. Bealo. Partisan has been galloping well on Iho tracks lately, and ho may bo in hidst de- - mand for tho Gladbrook Handicap, one
telle, while Harlequin will also have plenty of admirers. The Chokebore stable has a very strong hand in the Champagne Stakes with Long Range, Lionskin, and Heathcrcote. Punka, who carries Mr. J. B. Eeid'o colours, is a, very Bmart filly. After tho good showing of Matilda at Trentham. She may be favourite in the Apprentice's Handioap, ono mile. Despite his poor showing in the Trial Btakes at Wingatui Phil May may start favourite in tho Publicans' Handicap. Kilboyne and Battle Eve are both expects ed to show up well. When Demagogue races in the Jackson Stakes at WanganUi it will be in the joint interests of Mrs. M. A. Perry and Mr. H. E. Troutbeck. Entries for the Napier Park Cup Meeting are due on Friday. Handicans for the Dahnevirke Meeting are due on Saturday. Acceptances for the Wanganui Meeting are due on Monday. Post Haste has been troubled with bleeding lately, so T\ D. Jones did not take him to Dunedin with the other members of his team. Among tho horses engaged in the Dunedin Cud this week aro Rorke's Drift, -who won two years ago and started favourite last year, when he finished out of a place. Adjutant. Margerine, and Hose Pink are three other candidates who competed unsuccessfully last year, while Ogler, another in this year's field, was second to Warstep in 1915. and waß unplaced two years ago. J. E. Kaan. who did a lot. of riding for S. Trilford's South Canterbury stable earlier in the season, is now associated with the Awapuni stable, presided over by A. J. eheareby. Out of.tpur starts this season the two-year-old bombs has been placed first twica and second twice, being beaten both times by Fininark. Demos is a half-brother to Orleans and Jean Laddo, and is owned by the Peilding sportsman, Mr. E. Short. Piano, who wnn bought at the Korarmv sale by Mr. J. M'Kcan for 210ghs.j scored her first win yesterday for her new owner. It is reported from the Wairarapa that Hymestra has recovered from tho effects of his recent raishan. and will bo a starter at tho Wanganui Meeting. Other members of TV. Hawthorne's team to make tho trip will be Nanria,, Snub, Fableco, and Livlarid. A returned visitor from Oisborne. states that Mnrenea. who put paid to tho. account of War March on Saturday, is a. particularly smart horse, aiid will later on take, high honours. On the tracks on the morning of the race lie eallopcd half a mile outside the trestles in 49 seconds. This so confounded his owner that he thought Rome mistake must have occurred eo the horse was sent back to gallop tho same distanco again, but this time against tho rails. To the surprise of all he covered tho distance in 47 seconds, so his trainer this time believed his watch. In the race he run right, up to his best, and at no stage of the race did War March look like defeating him. Like the
rest of the Multifid stock he is a. wellgrown horse, and can jump hurdles well. By winning the Egmbnt Cup yesterday Chortle showed that ho is not yet a, back number. His form yesterday bears out the ! report that he was not himself in the Taranaki Cup, and would be benefited by the race. Thn Hawera Slakes, which is lo be. run to-diy, has not drawn a strong field. In the absence of Estland the favourite may bo tjie Yaldkurst representative Koesiari. So flir this horse has not won over a, mile course, but he scored last year in the Hazlett Memorial Plate, seven furlongs, and with a year on to his ace he should not find any difficulty in eoing iho extra furlong. He may go that fast over the first part of tho race that ho will get enough of a break to prevent the others from cartoning him. The following nominations have been received for the Dannevirke Oiyj. One mile and a hajf :-Bweet Tipperary, Kiltoss, Perfidy, Sariih Grand, Elevate, Maractotara, Trials, Vermilion, Silver Tongue, Multicipal, Jean Laddo, Tavistock," Master Houtoa. Messrs. H'oadly, Son, and Stewart, Ltd., j will hold a blood stock sale of Mr. E. J. ' Watt's brdiod mares, yearlings, and two-year-olds, on March 9, at 10 a.m. Catalogues majr be had on application to the auctioneers.
