Lieutenant J. 11. Gilmour, who has been attached to Canterbury district headquarters for some time past, and who previously had boon invalided from the front through wounds, came to Wellington on Saturday evening for a month's special training prior to taking over the duties of Assistant-I'ro-vost-Marshal for tho Canterbury Military District. Lieutenant W. H. Lieutenant C. B. Hull, of the Armoured motor Corps, wlio recently arrived in ;\ow Zealand from Russia, left Wellington lor his homo in Auckland yosteruay. Lieutenant Hull is a son of the late Mr. Kichard Hull, and left the Dominion with tho Main Body, lie went all through tho Gallipoli campaign, and was wounded anil sent to England. Later he received an appointment at the Codtord Camp, and then be joined the Motor Service, in which he was granted his commission. He had considerable difficulty in getting out of Russia after trouble commenced in that country. The first member of tho West Australian forces to receive the honour of knighthood is Major-General Hobbß, 1i.C.8. He was horn in England, and arrived in Western Australia
in 1887, and is a partner in the firm of Hobbs, Smith, and Forbes, architects, of Perth. His military record is in thiry-four years of service. He was second in command of the West Australian contingent at the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria, ami was one of the aides-de-camp of Lord Dudley during his tenure of the office of Governor-General. He was one of the first of the- Western men to offer for active service, and was a divisional commander at Gallipoli. there he was decorated K.C.B. for distinguished service as an artillery commander, and for the past twelve months he has been in command of the sth Austral linn Division. Mr. Tom Pollard, of Greymouth, is a visitor to Wellington, Mr. H. N. Hawker, of New Brighton, has received a cablegram from his son, Nelson, who is in England, intimating that he lias been appointed to the Flying Corps in Egypt. Pilot Hawker was ono of the first five who passed through the Sockburn Flying School. He left a few months ago for England to take up a position in the Iloyal Flying Corps.
Mr. David Jakeman, who had lived at Huntly for the past 41 years, died there last week. When he was a young man he joined the Army, md was attached to the 53rd Regmmt. With his regiment ho was sent to India, and was thero during the Mutiny, lie fought through sevoral engagements, and was awarded sevenl medals. In 1874 ho came out to New Zealand and joined the Eail.vay Per''ice, continuing in his work cf i;nli! his retirement 19 years aso. Tho congregation of St. David's Presbyterian Church, To Aroha, has decided to give a call to the Rev. A. Armstrong, of Picton. Mr. Hamblyn, who has been on the staff of the Hamilton Post Office for Bomo months past, has been transferred to the chief office at Wellington. Dr. S. Harcourt Arthur, who has been away for some little time, bas returned to Wellington.
