LOWER HUTT AFFAIRS

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. The fortnightly meeting of the Butt Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin) presided, and there wore present Councillors J. M'Dougall, S. G. Clendon, A. Hobbs, W. Kerr, J. Brasell, W. Walton, W. G. Meldrum, H. A. Ward. It was decided to accept the offer of Mr. John Friend for amending tho council's copies of New Zealand statutes to date. With respec*. to the sale of coal tar in small quantities to the public, the Petone Borough Council wrote stating that'it had no objection to the Hutt Borough Council engaging in the sale of tar provided the Petone Borough was pnid 6d. per gallon for all tar sold to private persons. It was dpcided to accept the offer a,nd to fix the retail prices at 6Jd per gallon for cask lots and 7d. per gallon for smaller' lots. In a written opinion the Borough Solicitor expressed the view that Convent property at Lower Hutt was not liable to rates. Mr. F. T. Martin, counsel fo the iSew Zealand Municinal Association, wrote advising that lodge-rooms were exempt from licensing. ' The Hon. A. L. Herdman wrote advising the council thnt the Public Works Department had been instructed to prepare plans and specifications for a new police station at the Lower Hutt. and that as soon as these wer* ready the question of proceeding with tlie erection of the building would bo considered.' .. [n rcnlv to a letter from the council the Valuer-General wrote stating that tlie Wellington District and Charitable \.irl Board's property had been marked "Exempt" in error in the valuation roll, and stating thnt the property was clearly rateable. There wnssome discussion on the subject, and it was decided to ask for an explanation. The Engineer in his report stated that the amount of gas purchased duriiif the ten months ended January oL was 12,601,000 cubic feet, and 11,400,100 cubic feet were accounted for.
