Utility Poultry Club, and the Uosornuient -poultry instructors It is expected that the work will. give general satisfaction to all poultryinen. While tho conference was'sitting the members of the N.Z. Utility Poultry Club arranged n reception, at which nearly one hundred members were present. It proved a very line social evening. Tho president welcomed the delegates from the North and .South-Island Poultry Associations, who had been engaged fixing the. utility poultry standard for the Dominion. Mr. J. H. Shaw (the secretary) handed over to the president tho Wyandotte Shield, to the cost of which Mesßrs. John Jarvis, E. J. Ross, and J H. Shaw had contributed. He said that in .drawing up tho schedule for. the present year's competition, he recognised that the programme .ought to bo an attractive one. Mr Jarvis and he had visited the comiietition. and' Mr. Jarvis had expressed the neod for Bhields to encourago breed points. He- offered £5 ss. towards a Wyandotte Shield if the remainder of the cost was found, and he had been able to find the remainder. Mr. Jarvis also offered £2 10s. towards an Orpington Shield. The president, in accepting the shield, paid a high tribute to the work done for tho club by. Mr. Shaw, and at the president's call three hearty cheers were given for Messrs. Jarvis, Ro6s. and Shaw. Tho president welcomed the delegates ■In tho conference, and referred to the important work they were cngigcd upon. Mr. Jarviß said that Ihey hoped to finish .their work during the week. The standards were being framed with the object of teaching the utility mon to come up somewhat, nearer to. the Btandard of perfection than had been the case in the paFt. He thought -that, they. were doing a lasting work, and he thought that ihey ob utility men would appreciate that, work when they saw the result, The two Government instructors-Messrs. Brown and Cusseu—h'-i't been of immense help, and he believed that the result of their labours would bo to promote the utility p'onltrr industry in- tho Dominion.

Government instructor, said, with respect to fising standards, that he bolioved good work was being done not, only from tho point of view of the poultry associations, but also from the standpoint of. the industry. (Applause.) (Applause.) He urged that.those connected with the poultry industry should organise on lines similar to the fruitgrowers and neekeepers. Reverting to tho standard question he said that ho hoped when they finished their work it would commena itself to all utility poultrykcepers. as well as to fanciers, throughout the Dominion. Ho urged that, oucc the standards were fixed, judges should not exact too close interpretations from exhibitors for the first year at least. Mr. 0 Gusbp-u, Government poultry lntruotor, briofly endorsed Mr. Brown's remarks. Mr. R. T. Hawke proposed the health of Mr. J. H. Shaw, wnich was enthusiastically honoured. Mr. Shaw, in responding, indicated that he intended retiring at the end of the flpancial year—an announcement that was received with much dlsBent. EGG-LAYING N.Z. UTILITY POULTRY CLUB'S COMPETITION.
