AMERICAN LAKE STEAMERS Owing to the urgent need of ships for . trans-Atlantic service, freigiiters in use ou the (jrcat Lakes of America are being reiuted tor tile work. At tiie yards 01 the American Shipbuilding Company at. Cleveland, Ohio, these Lake carriers are being cut in two parts to pernuc of liheir passage through the short locks of the Welland Canal to the Atlantic. The ships are placed in dry dock, and cut in two seclions with acetylene gus torches. The sections are boarded and caulked, after which the dock is Hooded and the sections pulled apart. They are then towed through the Canal and thence up the St. Lawrence River to Montreal, where they are rejoined temporarily. The ship is then taken jo an Atlantic shipyard, whero she is refitted and made seaworthy for ocean service.
