NEW COMMISSIONER CONGRATU- | LATED. The new Conciliation Commisioner for Wellington, Mr. W. Newton, presided at tho mooting of the Coupihution Council yesterday. Some references to his appointment, and to the transfer of Mr. W. H. Haggcr to the South Island, wero raado by the sreprcsontatives of the parties to the furniture trade dispute. ' Mr. W. J. Cousins (Auckland), an assessor for the employers, and Mr. D. Kennedy, secretary to the Furniture Trades Union, said that they had known Mr. Newton for many years, and were satisfied that he had the experience necessary to the successful conduct of his new duties,' and' that ho ■would be impartial in all his dealings with industrial matters. Mr. AY. A. Grcnfell, secretary to the Employers' Association, said that for some years ho had been brought into close touch with Mr. Newton in industrial matt-ers, and had been impressed by~ his excellent services and his absolute impartiality. The Government could not have made a better appointment. Mr. Newton thanked tho speakers briefly, and said . that ho would endeavour always to do .his duty with • fairnoss to all parties. 110 realised that his predecessor, Mr. Haggcr, had set him a high standard of success in tho settlement of industrial disputes. He hoped that the parties to tho dispute, at present before tho council would assist him to secure a settlement.

Mr. Gti'enfell also mentioned the success that had attended Mr. Bagger's work. He said that Mr. Hagfjer's disr cretion and judgment had been valuable factors in overcoming difficulties and preserving industrial peace in the district. Ho wished Mr. Ilagger every suooass in his new' disfaiet.
