The Defender is to sail this evening for Pioton, Greymouth, and Hokitika, taking cargo. The John is due here late to-night from southern ports. Messrs. G. T. The Tcsael arrived here at 11.30 a.m. yesterday, thus taking over 13 hours on the trip, despite the fact that all her propellers were working. The delay was due to contrary winds. The Japanese newspaper "Asahi" complains that many of the Tessels being turned out by Japanese, shipyards are poorly built. It says:—"Of late foreigners have preferred to pay a comparatively high price for middle-aged vessels rather than for newly-built ones. This may be partly duo to the foot that the Japanese Government docs not desire new vessels to bo sold abroad, but auother cause is apparently to be sought in the inefficiency of vessels recently built." Another vessel will soon be placed in t.ho Dunedin-Invercargill-ltivcrton trade, the bulk of which at present is handled by the Kotare. The "Star" says that a Dunedin syndicate has just completed negotiations for the purchase of the Auckland auxiliary schooner May Howard, which has been employed in the. coastal trade round Auckland for many years, and which has put up some good sailing records at the Auckland anniversary regattas. Captain W. Cameron, who is well known in Dunedin shipping circles, will command the vessel for her, new owners, and should reach Dunedin with the schooner in about two weeks. The May Howard, which was built at Brisbnno Water (N.S.W.) in 1886. la a wooden ship of 55 tons net register, and is fitted with a 60 h.p. oil engine as an auxiliary. Messrs. H. h. The Mahukona had 750 tons of copra "on board, and there is very little hope of salving much of it. The cargo of copra has been sold by tendor
