FEILDING SHOW
Excellent entries lave been received for the Feilding A. and P. Show, and, judging from the ring records of tho horses engaged in the jumping competitions and the dogs in the sheep dog trial, theso events alone should attract a good attendance of spectators.:- -Everything is said to point to a most 6ttccessful gathering—fine weather, teen competition, and plenty of side-shows for young and old, should make February 5 and G, enjoyable to those who attend the show.
Two Aberdeen-Angus cows, sent to Aberdeen joint sale by the Earl of Rosebery recently, made 580 guineas and 560 guineas respectively. Theso prices are the highest ever paid for females of the breed in an open sale in tho United Kingdom. According to Mr. Holme, of the South African Agricultural Department, there are at least eight million head of cattle in tho Union to-day, and their value is estimated at £50,000,000. Assuming fhat 10 per cent, of the cattle was available for disposal each year, representing 800,000 bead, and that the consumption of the Union is about 600,000, • the annual surplus available for export is approximately 20(1,000. Valued at £10 per head, that would mean £2,000,000 which South Africa should derive annually from the export of beef. Mr. Holme sees no reason why the Union should not have twelve million head of cattle within the next ton years, and. on an estimate of 8 per cent., within the nncxt decade a beef export of between £1,000,000 and £5,000,000 in value. In October last from Britain were exported some 608 head of sheep of the declared valuo of 16,360, or an average of £28 IS?. Id. apiece. The declared value beats all records for twenty-live years.
