If held on [hat ,day the Harbour Board's wharves, Btores, and bonded warehouse will be closed for ordiuary business and a general holiday observed.. If the union decides to postpono the picnic on account of weather, a four-flag signal will bo flown at the Mount Victoria Signal Station from B to 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday next, in which ease no holiday will be observed by the board, and the wharves, stores, etc., will be open for business as usual. The Kahu went on tho slip yesterday for cleaning and painting, and, with the Putiki, wi'l como off to-day, The steam trawler Nora Niven, is due to-day or tomorrow froiu Napier, "and will go on tli slip on Monday for inspection and cleaning and painting. , There have- been persistent rumours that thrSo vessels belonging to the Oceanic Steam Navigation Company, and plying with mails anil carco between Sydney and American ports, are to bo withdrawn from the ■service. It is understood, says an exchange, that the rumours, particularly in regard to one of the steamers, are well founded. Tho probability is tlmt tlieso vessels, if withdrawn, will be replaced by cargo-carriers of fairly large capacity, so that an uninterrupted service may bo maintained. The three steamers mentioned are twin-screw craft, having a speed of 17 knots. Instead of sailing on' Wednesday at 5 o'clock, the Knitoa will leave for Nelson and Motucka on Thursday at 3 a.m. This change has been mado in view of tho waterside workers' picnic on Wednesday." Loading operations will bo commenced at midnight.
