MAGISTRATE'S COURT

POLICE AND BY-LAW CASES. Mr. S. E. M'Oarthy, S.M., presided at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. For insobriety John M'Oarthy was fined 20s„ ia default seven days' imprisonment. For committing a breneh of his prohihitiou order William Ernest Dally was fined £2 and costs, in default fourteen days' imprisonment. Frederick A. C. Kingan waa convicted of committing two breaches of his prohibition order, and was fined £5 and costs, in-default one months' imprisonment on each charge, tho terms to be cumulative. Sidney Hall, for whom Mr H. F. O'Leary appeared, pleaded guilty to assaulting a boy named John Morrison. It was sta-ted that while cycling, the boy had knockcd down defendant's infant daughter and had then been impudent. Defendant was fined £2 and costs. A. Tubman was fined £5 and costs, in default oiio month's imprisonment for having used' obscene language. While travelling between ■ Johnsonville and Wellington in tho train a man named H. C. Wilson, when asked for his ticket, tendered (it was alleged) one that had expired, and refused' to pay the fare. lie was convietcd and fined 20s. and costs, in the alternative seven days' imprisonment. An elderly woman named Mercy James, 70 years of age, was charged with committing a breach of tho Post and Telegraph Act by using a used stamp for the postage of a letter. Her explanation wns that owing to failing eyesight she probably made a mistake in affixing the stamp. She was convicted and fined 10s. and costs. For riding a bicycle in the Basin Iteflerve at 9.25 0.m., without a lieht, E. Moore was fined 20s. and cost 17s. 6d.; and C. Pym, for leaving his motor-car in the street unattended, was fined 20s. and costs 17s. 6d. Tho nolice proceeded against Tfornce Jcycs for a breach of tho War Regulations in "shouting." .Tames Stewart Middleton for allowing H. .Teves to pnv forthe liquor consumnd by him, and Walter Ward Middleton. hnrmnn. for allowing "shoutlnc." The alleged breach occurred in (hp Onmbridirc Hntol. Defendants denied the charges and decision was reserved.
