A recent cable messago published in the Sydney "Sun" states that unsinkablo steamers are regarded as a certain postwar development. Only the necessity for the most rapid standardised construction provents the immediate adoption of a design which provides for longitudinal division into watertight compartments, each filled with cargo. It has been proved that a torpedo is unable to penetrate more than ono compartment, the pumping in of water on the other side rendering the vessel stable. The "Weekly Dispatch" mentions another type, named the "Brunton," in which automatic pumps will render stable a torpedoed ship.. The paper adds that the German 'Admiralty hae adopted similar plans, and is of the opinion that the extraordinary strength displayed by German battle-cruisers at the Battle of Jutland was due to balanced bulkheads. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. W. Smart, eccond engineer on a Union Company's intercolonial steamer, has come aehore. »Mr. R. Cornish has joined the Baden Powell as engineer, relieving Mr. W. W.
