POPULATION RETURNS
IMMIGRATION AND EMIGRATION. Tables showing the numbers of arrivals in and departure from Neiv Zealand during the year 1917, with totals for the previous nine years by way of comparison, are published in tho ehe. The total number of persons who arrived in the Dominion during Itll7 was 10,619, and the departures during the year numbered 13,8(39, tho excess of arrivals over departures for the year being 1780. According to returns furnished by tho Immigration officers, 2931 persons arrived from the United Kingdom, and 1501 persons departed therefor during the year. J!'rom the Commonwealth of Australia the arrivals are returned as numbering 10,146 persons, and the departures thereto as 10,44 D persons. Arrivals and departures from nnd to other countries were 2572 and 1863 persons respectively. Of the 15,649 persons who came to New Zealand last year, 1732, or 11.08 per cent, of the total, were children, i.e., under twelve years of age; and of the 13,869 departures the children numbered 1301, or 9.38 per cent. The arrivals and .departures shown do not include members of the Expeditionary Forces, who are still reckoned in the population of the country. Tho derailed figures show that durin" 1917 Ne" , Zealand had a net gam 0A430 people from the United Kingdom and a net loss of 303 people to Australia. The excess of arrivals ovm departures in the last five years has been: 1913. 14,219; Wl4, 5110; 1915, 307-5; 1916, 63fi; 1917, 1780. The effect of the war is plainly shown.
