TWO TRANSPORTS LOST
DISASTER IN THE MEDITERRANEAN RESCUING DESTROYER ALSO SUNK HEAVY DEATH ROLL (Rec. January 31, 10 p.m.) London, January 30. The Admiralty losses announced in the Houso of Commons last week were the transport Aragon, which was torpedoed and sunk on Decomber 30, and the auxiliary Osni'ameh, .mined and sunk on December 31, both in the same locality of the Eastern Mediterranean. A destroyer (the- loss of which was reported on January 7) was torpedoed and 6iink whilst picking up the Aragon's survivors. Tiio Aragon's casualties totalled 610, including Captain Bateman, and the Osmanieh's casualties 199, including Captain Mason and eight nurses.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.-Eeuter. ! FURTHER DETAILS OF THE DISASTER (Itec. January 31, 7.30 p.m.) London, January 30. Tho two transports wero lost between Otranto and Alexandria. The larger of . tho transports was the Pacific Mail Company's Aragon, with two thousand •' souls on board, including troops, nurses and medical staff. The second vessel was the old Khedival steamer Osircanieli, with eight hundred on board. Ij is believed that both vessols ran into a. minefield, the disasters occurring within a few hours of each other. It is interesting to note that during the war nine, transports in all have been lost, tho casualties agggregaing two thousand. Something like eleven million effectives have been carried witliout casualty, close on a quarter of a million troops being often afloat on a, single day .--Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
