STEAMER VICTORIA SOLD. It was reported in Sydney on January 18 that tho well-known steamer Victoria, of Messrs. Huddart-Parkor'B fleet, had been sold to Eastern buyers, but would still continue to run on the Australian coast. Tho Victoria is a 'steel vessel of 2969 tons gross, and 1870 tons net, and was built ",t Dundee in 1902. She was built principally for the passenger and cargo service between the Commonwealth and New Zealand ports. During the years tho Victoria has been engaged in this servico sha has mado quite a namo for herself.

Sewcll. of the Mapourika, has temporarily takon command of a Union Company's cargo steamer, relieving Captain J. Ryan. Captain T. Hunter, chief pilot at Lyttelton, who has been spending a month's holiday in tho North Island after his recent illness, haß returned to Lyttelton. Mr. H. E. Schmidt, mate on tho Waverley, has come ashore, and Mr. George Brown, who has been on leave, has rejoined the vessel. Mr. J. JI. Kirk, engineer on the Woolton, Ims signed oil tho articles, and Mr. T. Henry has signed on in a similar capacity. Mr. R. Cornish, second engineer on the. Hiniitangi, has como ashore, and his place has been filled .by Mr. N. E. Walker. Mr. Claude. FTooke, for ten years in chiu-ge of th- shipping department of the British cons„..'.le at San Francisco, has left that service, and is with the Sydney office of the Burns-Philp Company. The. following five vessels were prevented. By the rain from sailing yesterday:— Waverley, for Patea; John, Blenheim, and Kapiti, for Wanganui; and Huia, for Wanganui and New Plymouth. T'ney are advertised to sail this afternoon, Two of the Canterbury Company's boatß arc duo here on Friday. Tho Breeze will arrive from Wanganui to discharge sheep nt Petone and sail in the evening for southern ports. The Calm is due from (ho so.uth, and will sail the same day for Wanganui. The collier Kaituna is due about midnight to-night with coal from Westport. The Baden Powell put into Wellington at 8.10 a.m. yesterday while bound from Picton t-o the West Coast, owing to a slight mishap to tho condenscr. Bhe will sail to-day. Tho Hinemoa will leave Awanui Heads to-day for Cape Maria van Diemen. The Corinna will arrive at Wellington this morning from Lyttelton to load cargo for Nelson and New Plymouth, for which ports she sail's, this evening. Tho Kapuni sailed at 8 p.m. yesterday for Patea, and returned to port at 1.1 p.m. as a strong northerly wind was against her when she readied Terawliiti. The big American four-masted barque John Ena, well known at Sydney, Newcastle. and Wellington, and now owned by the Standard Oil Company, will, according to a report, have SouthwarkHarris Diesel engines installed upon her arrival at the Pacific Coast. This.vessel waß built in Glasgow in 1892. News received from London, dated November i 2, states that it is understood that after the present loadings tho net freight from England will bo:—To Capo Town and Algoa Bay, 1255.; to East Lon. don and Natal,- 130s.
