STILL RAINING IN QUEENSLAND ; NO SIGN OF,THE TOWN OP MACKAY Brisbane, January 28. i Tho latest news from Mackay states ! that the town is in ruins. There is no : gas or \Vater. supply, and the town is under police control. Heavy rain is still ' falling. Tho master of the steamer Arawatta ; reports that he remained in the vicinity, but there ~was"no" sign of the town —only a vast sheet of water. It is ' feareel that a calamity of enormous 1 magnitude has befallen Mackay, with appalling loss of life. —Press Assn. (Rec. January 28, 8.55 p.m.) Brisbane, January 28. All efforts to reach Mackay and the isolated districts have so far been ; futile. It is understood that Bowen I missed the cyclone, but the traflio was ; interrupted by floods, and the bridges ' have been washed away. Telegrapnio dislocation continues.
